Why Buy Organic?
Most people have heard that they should buy organic foods, but little has been discussed as to why. Whether you’re looking for foods that are healthier, want to reduce your environmental impact, or want to support small farms, organics can help get you there.
While there’s no clear evidence that organic foods are more nutritious, they’re definitely much safer in regards to harmful chemicals. Because organics are not grown using chemical fertilizers or pesticides, those toxic compounds won’t be found in your produce.
Because there are no petrochemicals used in organic farming, there’s no poisonous runoff from the fields to harm other plants or animals, preserving native species. Organic farms use beneficial insects, birds, even other plant species to control pests in their crops- this promotes a more diverse, healthier biosphere.
While organic farming can be more expensive an undertaking than conventional means, the initial operating costs for small, independent farms can actually be easier to deal with. No need to purchase large industrial equipment, pay for crop dusting, or pay into licensing fees for GMO crops can allow smaller agriculture businesses to start fairly cheaply. The downsides of this are that there tends to be smaller yields (and thus smaller profits,) and a greater dependence on manual labor to plant, raise, and bring crops to market.
Next time, I’ll talk a bit about organic meat and animal products.
