We Are Strong!
I’ve never had any instances of allergies to foods. My experience with allergies is limited to congestion, sneezing, and some itchy eyes if the cedar pollen count is really high. Then, without warning on Saturday, I get a serious reaction while peeling shrimp.
If you’ve been around the site, you probably know that D and I are eating locally, and so we purchased some wild caught Gulf shrimp. Ate it on Thursday, and were about to eat it again Saturday. About halfway through peeling, I started feeling hot. Then, I started feeling really hot. I asked D if she found it to be especially warm in the kitchen, and that’s about when she noticed how red my neck was. I went to the bathroom to look in the mirror, and was shocked by what I saw. I could literally watch myself swelling. Bright red, inflamed skin, with hives showing up all over.
Luckily, my sister is a Nurse Practitioner, and told us to get to the E.R., but to pick up some liquid Benadryl on the way. Long story short, after some nervous time spent waiting for something to happen, I finally started recovering.
That’s where the strong part comes in. Even after an immune system gone haywire, I’m back working, exercising, pretty much living normally. Sometimes, there are obstacles in our road to wellness, but it’s amazing how quickly we can heal, given the right circumstances.
