What’s the single biggest change that you can make to improve your lifestyle and wellness?
Make most of your meals at home!
While it certainly is convenient to grab a quick meal out, cooking at home is generally much healthier, less expensive, and more fulfilling. Even if you’re not an accomplished cook, starting to use your kitchen can make a big difference in your life right away!
Eating in restaurants introduces many problems in our lives. Portion sizes are often much larger than we need, the quality of ingredients often leaves a lot to be desired, and preparation methods are usually not geared towards a healthy body. Besides, are you sure you want to be eating food prepared by someone for whom your meal is just part of their job?
I know there are restaurants run by people who love what they do, are passionate about serving the best possible food, and truly care about their art. And if that’s the only places that you eat, then the last point is moot. You might even be fortunate enough to find a restaurant like that which also serves healthy, local, organic foods that are prepared in a healthy way, but honestly- how many of those are you frequenting? Besides, the expense of going to high quality restaurants can be debilitating!
The best way to ensure that the food that you take into your body is as good as it can be is to make it yourself. You control the ingredients, preparation, portions, all of it. If you’re new to cooking, start out with simple meals. Just a few ingredients, prepared simply, can create an amazing meal.
If you’re unsure where to start, there are a number of websites with great recipes. My favorite recommendation is Smitten Kitchen- good how-to tips, simple, non-fussy recipes with many healthy options (although be warned- many of the recipes are not particularly healthy!) For those looking for cookbooks, make sure that the ingredient lists aren’t over-the-top and preparation instructions are easy to follow. I really like The Feed Zone Cookbook. While it’s primarily catered towards athletes and workout-focused foods, there are many delicious yet simple everyday recipes.
Now go, get your basics, and stop throwing money at stuff that’s bad for you!
